Mexico- a city known for its gastronomy, is a perfect place for your vacation and some amazing, mouthwatering and affordable cuisine. From the crispy tacos to the soft tortillas, from the mousse cupcakes to Mexican icecreams, from soft tortillas to spicy quesadillas, Mexico has everything that you want. The food here is a major source of inspiration for countries around the globe. But the binging experience here is quite unparalleled.


What makes a Mexican breakfast so satisfying and delicious? The answer is, Chilaquiles. Fried corn tortillas bathed in hot red or green salsa sauce, and sprinkled with gooey cheese. It is a traditional dish where the corn tortillas are cut into either strips or triangles which are fried until they turn light brown. Additions like scrambled eggs, shredded chicken, guacamole and refried beans can be used to make the dish tastier as well as healthier. Topped with sour cream, this dish is best enjoyed with a good serving of frijoles (fried beans).


A traditional dish made in Mexico, it is best suited to kickstart your Mexican meal. A soup or broth that is made primarily of chicken, or pork along with hominy (dried maize kernels) along with toppings such as cabbage, chilli, onions, peppers, radishes, avocados, and other condiments that can work really well. The dish is stewed for hours, or even overnight to give it an amazing taste. Lime, salsa sauce and dried ground chilli are sprinkled over the top. Mexican prefer to have this during some auspicious occasions like birthdays or national holidays. 


Nothing is more satisfying than a meal that helps your hunger. Pambazos are the most iconic street food item of Mexico city, that once you try, you’ realize what Mexican cuisine is all about. It is basically a bread sandwich or you could say a bread roll filled with potato and chorizo, then dipped in a warm red guajillo chile sauce, giving the bread its famous colouring. The sandwich is filled with either pork or chicken fried beans, lettuce, salsa sauce and sour cream. Since they are quite big in size, one can also get its smaller version called, pambacitos.


A sauce that you can find in almost all dishes is Mole. A spicy sauce that you are likely to find on the menu with chicken, rice or broth, it is immensely popular. The common ingredient to mole is chillis, and other ingredients include nuts, seeds, garlic, onions, cinnamon and other spices. A thick and a savoury sauce, it also has sometimes the combination of nuts, chocolates, cloves and tomatoes. Ingredients can change depending on the dish it is being used in.


They are a dish made of either flour or corn tortillas, which are filled with different kinds of stuffings and taste so good, it will make your mouth water. Enchiladas are made with tortillas filled with anything from chicken to veggies, so a vegetarian can have them too. The stuffings include meats, cheese, beans, potatoes, which are mixed in a way so that they can be easily rolled or folded over, baked in red and green sauce, topped with cream, cheese and onions. The stuffed tortillas are then covered in a chilli sauce that makes it a perfect dish for Mexican breakfast.


It is a traditional Mexican dish which is very popular around the world. Mexicans say that “Tacos are a way of life” and the tacos made in Mexico are made by using small corn tortillas. There are different types of tacos, which are either made of corn or wheat tortillas and are folded or rolled around filling. A taco can be made by using a variety of fillings like meat, pork, onion, cilantro, seafood, vegetables, salsa and guacamole along with melted cheese on top of it. Tacos at various food stalls are way better than what you get in a restaurant. So tasty, so affordable, so good, you’ll want more.

Chiles en nogada

It is considered to be a patriotic dish of Mexico, not a national dish though because it has tri-colours of the Mexican flag. You will surely love it. Served usually at room temperature, chile en nogada consists of a mixture of diced meat, shredded chicken, dried fruits and spices called picadillo along with poblano chillis. Topped with a walnut-based cream sauce called nogada, it is sprinkled with pomegranate seeds, sour cream and green chilli.


A Spanish dish that was bough to Mexico and became super famous, it is a meal that consists of a sandwich that has fillings in it, which is grilled and eaten during breakfast. Molletes are made of bolillos (mini baguette). The bread is cut lengthwise and filled with refried beans, salsa, cheese and slices of jalapenos which is grilled in an oven until it melts in your mouth. For a vegetarian, this is a perfect snack for it is easily available in various options. 


Now we’re quite sure that Mexicans use their tortillas in almost every dish and it’s no wonder that it is also used in their favourite, tostadas. It is referred to as a Corn tortilla that is either flat or bowl-shaped which is generally toasted or grilled or can also be deep-fried until they become crunchy and crispy. They are either served plain or are garnished with various ingredients and toppings. They’re filled with frijoles (refried beans), pork, chicken, cilantro, seafood and also use avocado as a healthier alternative. 


A Mesoamerican dish that is very much in demand amongst the foodies, it is made of corn-based dough known as masa which is steamed in a banana leaf, or a corn husk. Pockets of corn dough are stuffed with savoury fillings which are either sweet or spicy that are wrapped in the corn dough bread or tortillas. Fillings may include cheese, fruits, vegetables, meat or seafood along with chillis and moles. It can either come as a dry dish or soaked in a liquid that is seasoned with various herbs and spices. One must try this dish, for it is a wonderful sweet, spicy and sour combination. 


Extremely popular amongst the locals of Mexico, a fajita in Mexican cuisine is any grilled meat that is served on a corn or flour tortilla. There are different versions of Fajitas which are made of either beef, chicken or shrimp. Other ingredients include onions, bell peppers, and also might include cheese, shredded lettuce, salsa, or guacamole. Toppings like sour cream or black beans and rice can be a great side dish. The meat used has a tender taste along with the acidic crunch of the bell peppers. It is best eaten when it is served hot at the food joints or stalls.


Belonging solely to the Mexican cuisine, this dish can be easily found only in Mexico and nowhere else. Gorditas are masa cakes which are much thicker than the tortillas and includes Mexican fillings in them which are made with love. Made of masa dough, this cake consists of meat, cheese, nopal salad, tomatoes, potatoes, beans and rajas. For healthier options, it can be made from eggs and guacamole and is also baked instead of deep-fried. It is a very gooey combination of cheese and the veggies that make the dish tastier.


One of the best dishes that the Mexican cuisine has to offer, it is very popular on the streets of Guadalaraja, Mexico for it was originally discovered by a street vendor.  It is delicious, simple to make, easy to carry and also it consists of a combination of fruits that are available during the season. One could even say that it is a fruit salad which includes strawberries, papaya, apples, bananas and cantaloupe which are chopped and then dipped in a bowl full of cream, and topped off with granola, pecans, raisins, and shredded coconut.


You may find churros from Spain to Peru, but we are quite sure you haven’t had the real churros of the streets of Mexico. Though Churros originally don’t belong to the Mexican Cuisine, this dessert will just be a perfect sweet treat! It comprises tasty, fried dough strips or rolls that are deep-fried in oil until they turn brown and crunchy. They are served hot on the streets, crispy and sprinkled with powdered sugar and cinnamon. It is best eaten when it is super hot for you can then feel the crunchiness of it.


It is a refreshing drink that can only be found in Mexico because it is made of the ingredients that are found there. A perfect drink that just soothes your body, tejuino is essentially a cold beverage or an atole made from piloncillo, masa – corn dough and water with a bit of lime juice. The masa dough is mixed with all the ingredients until it is heated and the liquid is very thick. The liquid is then allowed to ferment and then it is served cold mixed with ice, brown sugar, vanilla syrup, a pinch of salt, a scoop of ice or lime sorbet.

Esquites Or Elotes

A popular street food option, Elotes are a take of corn on the cob. The corn is slowly charred on the grill and then slathered with a sauce. The sauce is made of cheese, chilli, garlic and spices. You also get a few lime wedges to get a hint of sourness. It is one of the best ways to eat corn, period.


This dish is a staple, found on the table of any Mexican family. It is extremely nutritious and also delicious at the same time. Frijoles are beans which are boiled and served. You can have them alone or as a side dish. A staple comfort food in Mexico, this dish is one you must try.


The whole world now has an obsession with avocados and Mexico has the perfect dish for it. The dish is an avocado dip which can be used like a dip, salad ingredient or even a condiment. Definitely easy to make and super nutritious too!
